 | Hello?? Anyone home?? People, we complain and moan and gripe about the health problems in our breed. True? We wonder why vets don't know anything breed specific. True? Our dogs are dropping dead at 2,3 and 4 yrs old in some cases. True? We have HD probs, cardio probs, eye probs, skin probs. True? THEN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! Recently I have heard some mis-information about the current Lesh. study that Ohio State University is doing. THIS IS NOT A TEST! This is in no way, shape, or form a test to see if your dog has Canine visceral Leishmaniasis. As foxhounds are also in this study, and graciously footing the bill on some of it, this is from the AKC's Canine Health Foundation.... Canine visceral Leishmaniasis is an insect-transmitted disease caused by a protozoan parasite. Both humans and dogs can be infected. This disease occurs throughout the Mediterranean basin and is found in almost all breeds of dogs. Recent studies have shown that Leishmaniasis has found a niche in Foxhounds in the US. Overall 2 percent of Foxhounds in the U. S. are infected, but some hunts have had close to 40 percent infected dogs. At present, diagnostic tests for this disease do not always detect infected dogs even up to two years after infection. The aim of this proposal is to establish other diagnostic tests to better determine occurrence of Leishmania infection and begin testing Foxhounds with these tests to eliminate this disease from the US. Let me put it this way- If we don't get our butts off the couch and go give some doggy blood, do you think our breed will ever be able to participate in "more useful" studies? Or one's you feel we should? Is this one not useful to you cause your dogs don't live in the climates that host this terrible life threatening disease? Maybe this info would interest you then....
