I purchased a puppy from a breeder and picked her up from the airport Friday, upon noticing very runny eyes, I took her to the vet yesterday to find that she has entropia in both eyes and would need surgery. the breeder said this is very common and does not need surgery that she will be fine. IS this correct?? she also has cherry eye and the breeder said not to fix it but I needed to wait until she got it in both eyes....is this a good idea??
How Neo experienced is your vet? How bad is the entropia? If left untreated, it will damage the eye. How old is the puppy? It could get worse as the puppy matures.
The odds of the other cherry eye popping out is very likely. You could wait and it never pop out or you could get the first one treated and 24 hrs later the other pops out. All a gamble.
Does your vet want to tack or remove the cherry eye.
Pictures might help to see how severe the eyes look.
thanks for the reply...the vet wants to remove the cherry eye...the breeder said wait because the puppy should not be put under twice, she is 13 weeks old. The eye lids do turn in upper and lower but I can really tell if its rubbing the eye or not. The vet is not that experienced with Neo's nor are any vets in the area it seems....it seems to have read a bit about the neo's and knew not to try and tack the eye. thanks again
Hey Thor, Where exactly are you in NC? That may help- we have a few people here from North Carolina and Virginia.
Wait on the cherry eye. You can put a drop of mineral oil in the eyes 2x per day to soothe any irritation and to keep the gland moist until you decide. I usually wait at least a month if only one gland is out. The other one usually follows shortly after the first.
Definitely wait on the entropian procedure. Use the mineral oil and wait till the pup matures some. Find a more neo experienced vet to look at the eyes.
Posting pics and your exact location would definitely allow people here to be of more assistance. _________________________ Nikki Agrippina Mastino
I am not so sure that I would wait on the entropian. Really depends on how bad it is. Does the eye look cloudy? If it does I really wouldn't mess around waiting for the other cherry to pop out so that you can avoid putting the dog under twice. Entropian can get bad really fast and cause permanent damage to the eye not to mention a lot of pain to the dog. If it were me I would have the entropian taken care of as soon as you can get the dog in to have it done. Ask the vet if he/she would be willing to remove the gland in the eye that has not popped out yet while the dog is under. My vet is willing to go in and remove the gland if the one in the other eye has already popped out so that we don't have to have the dog put under twice. Put the oil drops in the eye at least 4 times a day while you are waiting on the surgery. But I honestly would not wait on the entropian surgery. Best of luck! Joni Doten
thanks again to everyone...its really nice to see that there are people that care about Neo's....I really appreciate the names of vets Agrippina, my wife is from Mooresville
About the Entropian at 13 weeks. If your Neo vet is familiar with lasers, there is a procedure they do when they take the laser and "tap" (NOT TACK) ...like making dots on the lower & upper lids with the laser. it is supposed to re-direct the lids apart more and leave the eye more open. it all depends on how bad the pup is. it is done on shar peis instead of tacking. new finding....as my vet has told me. no scarring like tacking and supposedly works wonderfully. ALL this BEFORE it gets to late and the eye is so scratched and cloudy looking. I feel the same about the cherry eyes as everyone else.
Unfortunately, no Neo Breeder guarantees eyes. or atleast i havent seen to many that advertise it on there sites and elsewhere.
Good Luck. Wait for Nikki to get you names of a good vet in your area. It will be so worth it! Charina Corrado Mastini Click This Link
Hi, Has your vet stained the corneas and done a slit lamp exam? If not, a vet experienced with this needs to be consulted. Entropian can cause abrasions, which are scratches on the surface, and are very painful. This is caused by the lashes. Can be possibly successfully treated with meds, and wait to see if repair is needed. If entropian is causing an ulcer, which is like a crater on the surface, this can cause a BIG problem, up to causing blindness! At that point, I wouldn't wait for surgical intervention.
