This is primarily a disease of sharpei.....well I imported a 2.5 year old female and she has it.
She came to us terribly skinny and we have despite our best efforts have not been able to put weight on her.
We tested for every disease possible and nothing...and other ailments.
We ran her through a 3 week cycle of doxycyline and no improvement.
We also tried other anitibiotics.
Recently she had a dramatic further weight loss...and then within a few days had both hocks swollen.
My vet tested and her her kidneys are now failing. The swelling has gone down in one leg but the other is swollen to her thigh.
From what I understand there is no treatment and she will have to be euthanized ..... if anyone has any insight into this syndrome please share any info you have. Linda Baby Blue Kennels Canada Click This Link
I will ask my mentor Lisa, usually Swollen hocks is a sympton of Shar-pei fever. I will see what she recomends. Although, if the swolleness is raising up to the leg, it might be something more serious
Please share what you find out Linda, our thoughts and prayers are with you and this girl. Jonathan 'Jax' Johnson Lady of the Lake Kennel ..................let loose the hounds of hell and enemy prepare to die!

Well....just to update......the swelling has gone down completely. She is still very weak and I have her on IV fluids. Tomorrow she returns to the vet to see if there is any improvement. She seems to improved somewhat to me (I see life in her eyes although I maybe fooling myself)....she will not eat dog food or hambuger but has eaten about 3lbs of beef hotdogs today...and now is drinking on her own and walking.
My vet automatically stated it was swollen hock syndrome but I have my doubts.
I have alot of great emails and pm's with suggestions and many suggesting it must be Lesmania but I spoke in length with Dr Christy Petersen that is heading the study and she does not think that it is lesmania or the south american type donovani. We do think it is something to do with her bowels. Hopefully tomorrow will give us more insight.
