Hello all,
just trying to get some advice from anyone on how to deal with this situation. My female puppy had to have the entropia surgery (16 weeks old). I had her evaulated by three vets and the one vet that was recommended for his experienced did the surgery....here is the problem.....she died for 4 minutes at the beginning of surgery. She is not awake (this was monday) and she still can not eat, drink, defacate or walk without assistance. The anesthesia used was propofol.
This is just such a horrible ordeal for us and her, she is such a sweet girl but I am afraid that she will not recover and the vet has no explanation on why this happened either. Has anyone ever been through anything like this and do you think she will recover??
thanks everyone and merry christmas

So sorry to hear this She is still not awake and the surgery was done on Monday? Did they use anything other than propofol? Did they do any blood work before they put her under anesthesia? When you said she was dead for 4 min. do you mean she had no heartbeat or anything for 4 whole minutes? If so it sounds like she probably suffered brain damage. Wow, I really don't know what to say other than I am very sorry to hear that you and your girl are going through such an ordeal. You will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us updated. Best wishes, Joni

thank you Joni, she is awake now but she cant eat, drink,or walk without assistance and yes I was told that her heart stopped for 4 minutes and she also now has pneumonia (spelling?) which the vet said was common when something like that happens....I guess now I am left trying to find answers and I wonder if she was given too much anethesia? really surprised that the vet is still charging me as well. Propofol and then isoflourene was given.
just really really terrible, worst feeling in the world

Sounds like the vet screwed up big time, did they by chance give her ace in the pre anesthetic cocktail ? I had a girl who was so groggy and out of it for 3 days because of her being given ace because the vet refused to listen, she couldnt even stand up to use the bathroom and refused food until she finally came out of it. My vet who crops for me wont use it at all on my dogs and I have always had a alert dog by that evening.

A bigger worry is what happend to her brain while she was under ?

i fear that she has brain damage from her heart having stopped for so long. Not sure if the vet gave her ace or not, I am going to try and get more info tomorrow....more than anything I hope that she recovers but it does not look good at this point....to make it even worse, the vet told me today that if I decided that she would not recover that one of his staff members wanted her (not really very appropriate considering the circumstances)

Our vet gives Isoflourene gas and then just a bit of propofol. Almost like the dog is just barely under - still moving around slightly .... almost like a restless sleep. It sounds like your girl may have had too much anesthesia. Where are you located? Maybe someone else on here can recommend a neo experienced vet for you. Good Luck.

Sounds like the vet screwed up. I know of a breeder who had that happen. The pup died for a few minutes during the crop then came back and about a week later came out of it and is still alive(2 years) but is not 100%. she did have brain damage and she still has an Audrey Hepburn twitch and sometimes has a hard time getting around but she put her in a pet home, she is still alive and doing well, just a little slow and the twitching. So there is hope for you and your pup. Just talk to you vet or another one....

Good Luck!
