I recently took my male to get his xrays done (Friday 12/26/08) and he seems to have developed an anxiety attack since then. I noticed him salivating excessively on Saturday the day after he came back from the vet, and then he stopped eating and started making odd burping and gargling sounds. He stopped making the gargling noises and stopped burping but he stil has slime all over him. His heart rate seems to be going faster than normal but it comes and goes. He also has diarrhea and is urinating in the house or before I can get him outside. The last time he drank was this morning but hasnt drank any more since then. I took him to the emergency vet last night thinking that it could have been bloat but they ruled that out. The only other thing they mentioned it could be was stress because of his vet visits. I also called my vet this morning and she said the same thing, she knows him very well and knows about his extreme fear of people. He has never reacted like this before, it is normally only when he is in the vet and not when he is home. We are going on about 24 hours now that he has been acting like this and I am worried. My vet also recommended that I not bring him back in unless I really need to so that we dont make it any worse. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to soothe him? He also slightly trembles when I touch him. How long can he go without food before I should take him to the vet? It is not getting worse than it was but it is not getting better either.

As long as he is drinking water he should be fine. A dog going a day or two without food is ok. Actually I have heard it is suggested you should fast your dog once a week for a day. Anyhow, water is the most important thing. What you need to do is start sociallizing your dog. A dog should not fear people, especially a Neo. My suggestion is to keep him at home, give him anti diarria medicine till he gets better. Once he is better start socializing the dog it is unhealthy for a dog to live in fear especially extreme fear of other people.

If your vet knows how he is- ask her to give you a script for Valium or Zanex. Just a few days on either one of those should calm him enough to get him back on track.
Ask about giving them before a vet appointment too. It may depend on what procedure they are doing on that particular day, so definitely ask.

I bought some stress relief medication from my vet when ground transporting a adult male, I didnt want to drug him but wanted somthing to take the edge off and she sold me this, its called stress away and although I didnt really think at the time it would really do anything it did, he did fine . I used it on 2 others this past week, we spent xmas in warmer climate ( oklahoma ) and it is a 22 hour drive for us which breaks down to 2-12 hour days of driving, and I brought my old grouchy girl and young rambunctious male along, gave them the required dose in the am's and all was so nice the rest of the days , I am even thinking about slipping a couple to my teenage daughter on the way back no more annoying cell calls where the word "like" is mentioned "like" 20 times

Seriously though you need to try something either prescribed or natural and get him out and interacting with people, he may not turn into a waggy tailed love all people but at least maybe get him to the point where he can go to the vet cause he sounds like he really stressed out over something simple.

good luck with him

Hi,
Have you tried rescue remedy?? It is a bach flower remedy, Some people swear by it.
A couple drops on the tongue, I think.

I think valerian is a natural remedy for stress, or maybe make some chamomile or peppermint tea, sweeten with a tiny bit of honey or brown sugar..
And try not to stress about it... your dog picks up on your anxiety.

Are you sure he did not contract something at the vet? I cannot believe that it would be just stress ......that long after?

I'm with Linda. He should be over the stress of the trip by now. I would lean toward it being something else at this point.
And definitely get that boy out more. Walks relieve a lot of stress and also biuld confidence. Trips in your vehicle are good too, even if it's just a trip to the bank or McDonalds where he gets to see new people. If they don't offer treats at the window, bring your own and treat him.

I got him at 7 weeks old from a breeder in south GA, and I believe that the female had many, many issues and they just bred their male to get the stud fee. I have had so many problems with my boy since I got him, the fear thing started right off the bat and I went through numerous amounts of money for training, hours upon hours of socializing and did everything that the trainers, breeders and books said to do and he just never grew out of it. I take him on walks and introduce him to new people on occasion hoping that he will calm down or grow out of it, it is a little hard though because he is aggressive-fearful and I am a 5' tall 120lb girl that would be drug across the country if he decided to go! He has never bit anyone but he sure acts like he will! I had major issues with him during training because the trainer said that he is very fearful and very dominant (I had a Presa living with me for a while but after too many dog fights he had to go cause my boy would not back down). He listens very well to me, but I just dont know what he would do or how far he would go because of his fear. Unfortunately my lack of knowledge led me to choose the breeder that I did but I wouldnt trade him for the world.

Regarding his behavior over the past few days - I got home last night and noticed where they had given him a shot near his right shoulder (it was a bump I noticed right away when he got back from getting his xrays and I was told that it was an antibiotic and fluids to keep him hydrated) and it had gotten huge! It sagged off of his shoulder and started developing under his leg as well. He then started limping and eventually around 4am this morning could not hardly walk on it at all. I stayed up with him all night and helped move him from one possition to the other because he didnt have the energy to and then rushed him to my vet at 7am this morning and dropped him off. I havent heard back from them about him yet except to tell me that he had xrays done and an IV put in, and that he was resting. I called my vet last night to tell her how things had progressed and she said that it was more than likely infected which could cause all those problems that I assumed was him being stressed out.

I just heard from the vet and she told me that he was suffering from severe dehydration. She said that they did xrays so that they could rule out bloat for sure and bloodwork as well. There were no infections, he just wasnt absorbing the fluids that they had given which is why the large lump was on his side. I dont really know why he would be imping if it wasnt infected though...I need to ask them about that. I get to bring him home tonight and then he goes back in the morning to stay on the IV all day again.
