Last night 17 april 2008 , The most horrific thing id ever seen happened, my 7 yr old neo got bloat, I feed him twice daily, and i feed him royal canin then gave him some raw beef which he thrives on, but last night he was gulping it down because my little neo pup was beside him, which was a mistake! I went through to the kitchen 2 minutes later and seen him trying to be sick but nothing was coming up, at first i thought he was choking then eating it again, then i noticed his stomah was swelling rapid! i phoned vet instantly and he said bring him up , luckily he saved my neo, but i can understand why people dont see it especially if a dog lived outside, it is a heartbreaking thing to see, his stomach must have been the size of a beach ball, luckily we noticed it early, the vet has fixed his stomach to the side so it wont twist again.

I have a pup neo who i have on BARF diet and she is shining with health, i was wondering if anyone knew of royal canin causing bloat as the vet said thee was alot of kibble undigested in his stomach, this is th first time i have had to deal with bloat and was horrified at how quick it happens.

Id be grateful for any feedback. My neo had to come home this morning as the vets cages were too small for him, usually they stay in, so im nursing him myself, im so glad i spotted this in time.

Bloat is not due to the dry kibble you are feeding him. I beleive it could of been caused due to his rapid eating, making him swallow more air than usual, causing his stomach to turn. Elevate his food bowl and try not to feed him with other dogs around. Good luck.

Just be aware that many dogs who bloat do so again and often within a couple of days of the first bloat. Feed him small meals several times a day until he is settled.
Noone knows the cause of bloat.
Wishing you all the very best and hopefully this was a one off episode simply caused by greedy eating.

Carrie.

I am glad you caught it in time...And am sorry you had to go through such a scare.

Everyone does have a theory as to why the dog gets bloat...No matter the means...Air gets trapped, when the stomach twists, the air and other gases from disgestion have no where to go so th stomach just expands...The rest you know...

Since this did just happen recently definitely feed small frequent meals, in a calm environment so that your neo doesn't feel the need to rush. Also keep in mind that this can happen if water is gulped up quickly too...There was one dog that came into the vet too who got bloat just from exercise (bit of a freaky situation).

Keep in mind that raw meat and kibble digest at very different rates. Raw meat digests rapidly in a dogs stomach and includes a lot of moisture. Kibble has had all the moisture removed to make a hard little nugget. Royal Canin kibble includes a fair amount of grains and most likely more grains than meat. Dogs as carnivores(in my opinion), have trouble digesting grains as their digestive systems are not set up for digesting them.

Consider this scenario--If your dog gulped down kibble then consumed raw meat it is logical that the kibble could block the exit from the stomach as it takes significantly more time to be broken down by the stomachs digestive juices. Meanwhile the raw meat is sitting behind the kibble being broken down. While this whole process is taking place gas is being produced, but cannot move along out of the stomach so the gases begin to build and bloat ensues.

Raw meat is great and I don't feed anything besides raw meat to all my dogs. If you make the choice to do both kibble and raw meat consider separating them into separate meals 12 hours apart.

Here is a link to reviews of multiple Royal Canin dog foods that may interest you. Consider the many questionable ingredients in this brand(Corn Gluten meal, beet pulp, more grain than meat...)

Hope you neo is feeling better,
Shannon
