I have heard from many many people that they "don't understand" why I would shell out the money I do on dog food. What are your thoughts on feeding? What's worth it? What is a waste of money? What ingredients do you avoid/look for? How much do you spend on average, and why have you chosen to commit the time/money you do into feeding?
This could be for any dog, or about your Neo in particular. "Mais tu ne dois pas l’oublier. Tu deviens responsable pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivoisé." - Le Petit Prince
In general I buy what is on offer in the supermarket or at the butcher shop. So weekly costs are not really available. I only avoid what the dog doesnt seem to eat straight away due to the heat and sometimes its cheaper spending a little more and at least see it eaten than buying cheap and watching it go to waste.
I believe that the right food is the staple for how your dogs develop in the future....Just like kids you feed them junk and teeth start rotting, may become over weight, heart issues from fat surrounding the heart, coat issues to even hearing and eye problems as well as allergy problems.
I started out with Eagle Pack (natural) good brand but Fenice had a bit of dander and would rarely eat her breakfast and would wait until I mixed whatever in it at dinner...others didn't care. <---price jumped so I switched I now have my dogs on Nutro-holistic...every one loves it and I'm really happy to say I've noticed Fenice's coat looking better as well. I also mix vitamin's in food every day as well as meat, Evo, fish etc. at night. I feel that if I take care of them this way then in the long run I may not have health problems related to poor diet.
I agree Jess, this is actually to help me get some data for a paper I'm writing for my Advanced Topics in Animal Nutrition class. . .
I want to be able to amass all of my thoughts on nutrition and why we would feed our dogs better than many of us eat ourselves (much the way new parents will often begin to pour over the ingredient lists of baby foods), and then add commentary from other people working in the companion animal field. That's you guys
The thesis is that while all non-rumenents have roughly the same needs (AA's, Vitamins, Minerals) that the desire is different in dogs. We're not feeding for rapid growth and lean muscle mass alone, we're feeding for longevity and quality of life.
What made you choose Eagle Pack originally? And how did you decide on Nutro as a replacement? I'm interested in what marketing techniques/company claims affect buyers as well as what information you came in with, and how that influenced you.

We don't really place too much value in the "price" of the food or just automatically look to the "high end" of things. We look for adult foods low in fat with Glucosimine Condroitin. Supplements is the kicker; hearts, chicken, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, bread, and vitamins.
We buy in bulk so its not too expensive (Sams Club, Wal Mart, ebay for coupons, commissary, etc.). Anthony
depends on the dog and what that specific brand does for them, or maybe a raw diet or a modified raw diet is what the dog does best on. I would never tell someone to feed ol roy, although I had one who lived happily on the stuff, she would sneak it from a pot belly pig, she was fed another brand but I would say overall her diet consisted of at least 80% ol roy I have/had dogs who do well on very expensive no grain food and look great, I have/had dogs who have done well on mid grade food, and even junk food. Nowdays with the price of everything your better off going with a higher grade food anyways, ol roy is neck and neck with pedigree on price and nutra nuggets at freddie's is only about 75 cents more. Let me define my term "High end" -- I did not mean to imply that the food needed to be expensive, more that dog owners (particularly show dogs/breeders) are drawn to high quality ingredients.
There's plenty of high priced crap, Science Diet anyone?! LOL !ill
Interestingly, ALL of my text books on dog nutrition were written by CEO's of Science Diet . . . now THAT is an effective use of a monopo-AHEM! I mean "marketing" "Mais tu ne dois pas l’oublier. Tu deviens responsable pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivoisé." - Le Petit Prince
I started using Eagle Pack because that is what Fenice (when I purchased her) was used too...AND since she was shipped I bought some previously to her coming so my others would be used to it and I didn't want to stress her from changing her life...and food all at once. I honestly switched because the size of bag dropped and the price went up!? AND since Fenice was the reason I switched my others to it and she wasn't eating it like she should and had dander I started looking..talking to people and touching it smelling it the hole nine yards.....I liked the look, smell and the holistic was not as greasy as the other Nutro's and since I didn't want the main ingredient to be corn or the like I decided on that...AS well as what was in it... and I got more for the same price as Eagle pack..they give a free bog @ six apposed to 12 like Eagle and it has better ingredients in it.
