Some time ago, we put a dog on Ivomec for demo. When we did we were told to watch for signs of sensitivity, like seizures, shaking, vomiting, etc. We never did notice any unusual behavior. However, after he was on the full dose for awhile, he slipped down a couple steps. They were carpeted stairs to the basement; otherwise, the floors are hardwood. The next day or two, he slipped again while I was next to him and I sort of controlled his fall, this time about halfway down the steps.
A few days later, we took him upstairs to take a bath. These stairs are hardwood. After the shower, he refused to go down the stairs. It took us an hour to coax him down (which was more like pulling him down while I had his hind end in a sling (ACL experience helps)). After that he refused to go down stairs at all. He would walk up to the landing and then just stare at you. He never had a problem going up the stairs. In fact a couple minutes after we got him down, but before I could put the baby gate back up, he tried to shoot back upstairs. From that point on, the only way to get him to his crate was to walk out on the deck and down the back steps to the basement. Those stairs are concrete, so he could get a good grip.
Well, he has been off Ivomec for about 3 weeks and a few days ago, while my girlfriend was in the basement with Lily (our female) he ran down the stairs to get to them. Then today, he knew I was down there and just spontaneously got up and ran down them again. So knowing that the symptoms we were suppose to watch for with the Ivermectin were related to the nervous system, has anyone ever experienced this? It appeared as though he became fearful of the stairs because he was wobbly and did not have a sure-footing, that seems like it may be nervous-system related. The fact that after being off it for a little while, he just started going down on his own leads me to believe there may be a correlation. Just curious if anyone has experienced this as well.
Brian , I have never heard of it, nor had the problem as I have always given small doses compared to what is needed in demo cases. It does indeed make sense though. Glad he is better now. _________________________ Nikki Agrippina Mastino
Thanks guys. Yes, the demo finally cleared up. As to the stairs, he seems to be better. We are being a little more cautious right now because we don't want him to slip and lose confidence, while at the same time I don't want to pamper him too much.
Just out of curiosity, I am going to check with the vet and if I hear anything I'll post the info.
Maybe what he was experiencing was a little vertigo, A raised temperature, caused by the vaccination ?? I think thats probably the most likely cause...
Has anyone experienced any other side effects caused by Ivermectin?

I think I posted his history on the USNMC site, but in order to inform those reading this thread, I will re-post.
We had a severe problem with demo. After repeated treatment (dips), our vet recommended oral ivomec treatment. His final dose was about 3.5 cc everyday. I think he was on this tmt for about 3-4 months. Thus, there was not a vaccination issue. On the positive, he has been demo-free for the past year and a half.
As far as taste, he is a real pig and very food motivated. I think Nydia recommended a recipe for making meatballs to put the ivomec in, in order to mask the flavor. Several recipes can be found at:
ahh ok, I have special interest as I lost a lovely female last year to demo, in the end I just couldn't watch her suffer anymore and she was PTS. I did a lot of reseach on the problem and tried every treatment possible over a 5 month period with no real improvement. EXCEPT for oral ivermec as my vet would not prescribe it!
Were you using amitraz dips? Did you continue using the dips along side the oral ivermec? Over what period of time was the ivermec given? What was the dosage he started on? and when did you start seeing a noticeable improvement?

I think i recall someone posting a few years ago that giving oral ivomec in larger quantities for demodex will most likely result in bitches having fertility issues later. Anyone who knows better could perhaps shed some light on the issue. Phil
Brian these are the side effects they tell you about for humans....
GENERIC NAME: IVERMECTIN - ORAL BRAND NAME(S): Stromectol (for human consumption) USES: Ivermectin is used to treat infections caused by certain parasites.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, bloating, diarrhea, headache, lightheadedness, dizziness upon standing, fast heartbeat, chest pain, change in the appearance of the eye, eye swelling/redness, fever, joint pain, swollen or tender glands (lymph nodes), swelling in the arms/hands/feet. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
IMO, i'm sure dogs could suffer similar side effects... Another thing i've noticed: there seems to be more positive results from taking oral tabs than by injection...
