So I had a very strange thing happen this morning. We have an appointment this afternoon and so I took the day off work. I got up, fed the mutts, and went back to bed. I got up an hour or so later and took a shower, ol' man and dogs fast asleep.
Grimmy sleeps on the floor next to the bed, sort of in the doorway of the bedroom. After showering I went back to the bedroom and Grim woke suddenly, and started barking and growling at me as if I was an intruder. I called to him, trying to calm him down, but he didn't seem recognize me or my voice. I moved back a little and more into the light, and he finally came out of the room and recognized me, and everything was ok again.

I was quite startled by the incident. Grim is very much a mama's boy and is usually 2 feet from me all the time. John thinks he was startled by me because I wasn't supposed to be home, and I broke their usual routine. Plus it takes him a couple minutes to really wake up when he's been sleeping hard. But I'm troubled he didn't recognize me right away. The barking went on for at least half a minute, which is a long time when you're sweet puppy's barking at you with his best big dog voice.

I've have a dog with aggression issues before, and I'm probably overly sensitive, but I worry about Grim's development. He is only 6 months, having growing pains, very awkward, and hasn't grown into his big paws yet. But I think he is starting to recognize his role as defender. So what do you all think. Does this incident mean anything? It's not the first time he hasn't recognized me right away.

Neos are not the breed to be awakened suddenly when sleeping. I would not see this as a problem. He was just startled out of a deep sleep. Have you read Dr Allen's book?

I don't really think so...My one female forgets who my husband is all the time! Make your presence known before walking up to a sleeping dog and you should be fine. <---I think he was just a bit fearful and wasn't sure who the heck was there, since you just had a shower your scent wasn't well known o him either.

TBH i think thats normal for mastino

it takes em a while to come around out of the grogginess of sleep both their eyes and ears,

As the old saying goes never put your hand into or near a sleeping Mastino as they are liable to bite first and realise who it is after

Just my own experience with my dogs and from being at others kennels.

A pup that age was startled and fearful. Fear is usually the predominant emotion until after puberty in these kinds of instances.

I wouldn't worry. No, not a normal reaction, but next time you'll know to YELL at him. What I would have done LOL. Gets their attention quicker. Makes em realize it's you.

Really good stuff. Try a library. Some will do a library to library loan program to find it for you. Dr Allen is very blunt and honest in her book.

Nikki found it for $25...if you can believe that....I read my first copy from a library...then paid $150 for mine on ebay.
