Ok for years i have heard not to breed tawny to tawny but no one has ever been able to give a concrete answer as to why? Can anyone explain this? I see it like two blue eyed blonde haired people having a baby...what would be the problem?

I do not actually know a single person that has done this nor have i ever seen a litter advertised.
At least i cannot recall such a litter.
I assume that everyone says this because the general overall quality of Tawny is low and Very difficult to find good breeding examples. And i guess even more difficult to find 2 good examples.
So the advice not to breed 2 tawny mastini is due to that rather than the anything else.
If there were 2 good examples then it would be different. I guess its easier to find 1 or 2 good recessive grey dogs to maintain the quality and still produce tawny but even then the results are usually not great. Phil
ok...Phil that I understand but outside of quality what is the reasoning? People say do not breed to recessive coats? Is there a genetic reason? Linda Baby Blue Kennels Canada Click This Link
That i do not know but i do not see what difference it would make myself but i am not a geneticist.
I see it as only a coat color
if the quality is there in the parents and grandparents i would expect to get similar in the litter and even though all tawny if you breed them to dominant grey or black you will not get any tawny offspring so what can the big issue be? Phil
I would like to see two nice typey Tawny dogs paired up and I think I would enjoy having a good quality blonde dog. I like the color but it is extremeley hard to find good quality anywhere. I only know of like 3 nice tawny mastini as of late and two are dead. Alejandro Gonzalez Mastino Del Valle Grande
It seems that the reason the tawny quality has gone down hill is because they have fallen out of fashion for quite sometime now.
I remember the early nineties in north america, no one wanted black.....they quite often sold for less. There were some beautiful black ones too but the majority of black dogs looked like black labs. Then the greats Carnera and Brigante came into light with the help of the internet and then everyone wanted black. Then good quality blacks began to be imported like Fortunato and Fidelio.
Back then there were lots of quality tawny mastini and even a few good mahogany mastini.
Now it seems that more people are trying to bring back tawny. Hopefully it will follow suit and we will have some great one in the next few years.

So are we decided that there is no genetic reason then?
Its just a lack of quality tawny dogs thats the issue?
I personally would prefer a coloured grey to use on a tawny than 2 tawny dogs in a breeding simply because I do not personally think that it will be easy as one thinks to sell. From talking with many its definitely an acquired taste. Phil

There is no reason why you cannot or should not breed Tawny to Tawny. Why this is not done?? I beleive this is because Tawny is a rare color. The nice thing about it is, if you do breed two tawny dogs, you will have ALL tawny puppies.
Remember color gene has nothing to do with Type. The color gene is a total different gene.
