I am the proud new owner of a beautiful 15 month old male neo. He came from a breeder and was the "roamer" amongst 8 other neo's she was breeding, he lived outdoors, had free reign basically. He is adjusting quite well for such a drastic change. We have four children and work during the day. He alternates between staying indoors and out, we stop home at least four times a day between 9 and 3 to check on him, play with him and walk him. In a few short days he has mastered "heel" and "sit", and is working on "come". Last night he started howling when we went to bed (actually sounds quite like a whale!) and howls when he can see us, but is not allowed access to where we are in our home. Any suggestions on how to overcome this? Also, what toys do you recommend for a dog his size? He basically chews through everything we try! And while I was amused by the Elk Antler suggestion in another thread, they just aren't easy to come by in New Jersey!

Any suggestions on adjusting him would be greatly appreciated!

Allie!lol

I would suggest exercising him before bed time. This will wear him out before bed and less likely to howl. When howling... ignore the dog. You cannot let him learn that when howling, he gets attention. Regarding toys... my Neo is not a chewer, but I've had other dogs that were, I always used a giant size Kong and stuffed it with peanut butter that keeps them busy... for a while.

I think the best chew toys for these guys are good old bones. I have the butcher cut them big for us so they can't be swallowed. They love to lay down and lick the marrow out and it keeps them occupied for quite a while. I would try to just ignore the howling (I know easier said then done) and he should stop after a while when he figures out it is not going to get him any attention. Good luck with your new boy and welcome to the Underground Mastino!

!amazed entertainment, how about a frozen tub/ or plastic container with his favourite kibble frozen in water in it, it will keep him amused for ages trying to get the kibble out. The kong is always great, stuffed with peanut butter or dried treats frozen in water.
My guy, likes a cardboard box to destroy. I have just recently given him one of my husbands old leather belts, without the buckle, and I tied a knot in one end and he has been chewing on that. I guess my all time favourite dog sitter is the large cannon bone cut in half so that they can access the marrow. Of course most of these are only suitable for outside. Another you could give is a pigs head, that would keep him busy for ages - but agin best given outdoors away from the house!lol Good luck.
Oh and they do sound like whales when they whine, very sing song - just ignore, he'll give it up when he knows it gets him no attention.
Pulls on your heart strings tho:((

I may be the downer here but I would NOT go and visit the dog during the day IF your not going to continue doing this when you have had the dog for awhile. Set what rules you want now so that the dog can get into the routine. If he has been outside the entire time up till now, he will do fine and will adjust. If you want him inside then crate him while your gone. My rescue dogs use their crates as permanent beds and sleep in there when Im home with the crate door open. A crate may also help the dog with the issues at night. My neos like their kongs but arent big toy dogs. Twice or so with the ball is about all I get.
CONGRATS btw Neos are a wonderful breed !

I don't let my dogs upstairs. You could try leaving a radio or tv on for a bit when you go to bed. And just make him tired and quiet time.
I don't know if it aplies but I don't think they see so good at night, mabe a light.
