once the wound bursts ...you should drain it, to the best of your ability(milking)...then the wound needs thoroughly cleaned with bentadine... whats been suggested to you will only allow the wound to re-seal and get infected worse than before... i find it hard to believe a vet worth his salt didnt recognize the initial problem for what it was... yet several members diagnosed it without even seeing the animal.... YOU NEED A VET EXPERIENCED IN MASTIFFS... i dumped my vet of 25 years when he botched a couple cherry eye surgerys...and he was renowned, across the country...so being knowledgeable of mastiffs makes a big difference
Hey John, You have got to remember Vets are like GP's only rehersed 'General Practice' a vet with Mastiff experience is worth his salt, but specialised stuff still needs specialist attention, neither of us would go to our own Doc for eye surgery... But certainly sounds like a change of vet is needed here!!! Yeah guys, Just a final update. The swelling has finally gone down, I guess the antibiotic worked. After the "drainage" , he felt a lot better I could tell. He was starting not to eat because the lump was right at the throat, so fortunately it blew up when it did.
I did go out and buy some Bentadine and treated it like you said. Thanks again for your help. I will try to look around for some different vets with mastiff experience. I just had this guy for quite awhile and he did a good job with Brodi's cherry eye operations. He did know what I was talking about when I mentioned about how Neo's and anesthesia.
He did know what I was talking about when I mentioned about how Neo's and anesthesia. incomplete sentence or thought????
i thought my vet of 25 yrs could walk on water....good thing life wasnt lost........ find hard to believe any vet having practiced any amount of times, never seen a dog bite on another dog.....or how to address it.....
anesthesia i use is ketamine....but when did we talk about it?
Oh yes I tell people not to trust vets 100%. Really they don't know everything. And it is better to find a vet that will talk to you. Some have the air I went to school don't question me, and I will not use those vets. Here are a couple stories why.
First story, I have done all breed rescue for many years. And the lady Michelle that I fostered for, fell in love with the Mastiffs and got her a Mastiff male pup. Well she knew not to ever let the vet give him baytril. So she calls me one day when he was nine months old. She said he had an UTI. She said and my vet did good he prescribed Cipro instead of Baytril. I said Michelle, Baytril and Cipro are the same. She jumped in her car while I was on the phone and drove over to the vets. She was blessing him out and this was his response. He said your dog weighs 140 lbs how much bigger do you think he will get? She said his dad weighed 230lbs he is only 9 months. The vet began to apologize immediately, and told her he would refund the cipro, and keep it for rescue. Plus put him on SMZ. He knew large breed pups should not be on Cipro or Baytril, but thought the dog was as big as he was going to get.
Second story. Chimera had a spot in the folds of her neck at the age of four months, we had it scraped for Demo. It was just a hot spot. When she was 14 months old she broke out in an awful rash all over. I had Dad drive her to the same vet and told Dad I wanted her scraped for demo, and a full fungal done. Dad called and said he will do the fungal but said he scraped her for Demo last Feb. I said Dad you tell him Demo can pop up at anytime and I want her scraped. We hung up Dad called a few minutes later on his way home, and said it was an allergic reaction and he had some antibiotics and steroids. I said I can't believe I had to ask for Demo scrape. He said well he was perfectly happy to do it after I asked again. I said that was just it, I should not have had to ask. Most people would have listened to the vet, and what if it had been demo?
Always make sure your vets are willing to listen to you. They only have experience in what ever they specialized in, or have seen often. They do not see Mastiff breeds as often, unless they specialize in the larger breeds. I had five great vets I used back in Hickory. I am having to find vets I trust now in my new area. Yesterday, I took Dragon in to a new vet for rabies, and he was very easy going, and willing to ask questions about the large breed. I will be using him some to see how he is. And if worse comes to worse I will make the hour and a half drive to my old vets. Starrsdcct Neapolitans UGM Admin
