Hi, I have a 3 year old Neo. Two days ago, when he came in from the back yard, my wife noticed that his dewlap was swollen. When I went to look at him, I felt under his chin and it was really hard, like a giant tumor. We took him to the vet, but they were not sure of the cause of it. All they could tell me was that they had cases before, where dogs either got bit by something, or ate some rat poison.
I asked the vet if it could possibly be some kind of allergy, but he dismissed it because Brodi had a fever of 104 degrees.
Well, they ended giving him some shots, and gave me some anti-inlflammatory pills to take home with me.
It's two day later, and the swelling on the sides of the dewlap has gone down, but the one in the middle is still there.
I was just wondering if anyone has experienced something like this and what did you do. I'm just a little bit anxious, even though the vet said it would take 6 or 7 days to go see any changes.
Hi, well if he had a temp of 107, I would say whatever the cause, you now have an infection in the glands, be it the primary cause of the swelling or a secondary infection from a bite. 6 days of anti inflammatorys are not going to treat the fever. I think its second opinion time. Just my 2 cents, hope he gets better soon. Carman Cynthia Carman
Thanks Carman. Man, it was just a couple days ago I was reading all these health posts and thinking that I've been pretty lucky with Brodi in terms of any major health issues. Should have knocked on wood.
ive dealt with it at lease a half dozen times...its always been from one of the other dogs biting the particular dog in the throat, or vicinity, and they can swell up and make the dog look like elephant man...the remedy is always the same...lance it ...run a tube all the way through the affected area with a pair of forcepts(so the tube is sticking out of both ends of the tumorous looking thing....you may have to run the forcepts into the tumor up to 8 inches till it comes out the other end of the "BOIL"...suture both ends so it stays in place and promotes draining for 4 to 5 days...at which time cut the sutures and pull the tube out....the whole time the dog is taking antibiotics morning and night.... when you make the initial incision.... the "Puss will shoot outta the bump like a firehose....(Not for the faint of heart)...back to normal in a weeks time

Yes! That's exactly what it looked like, "Elephant Man"! Poor Brodi!
The only thing is the vet tried twice to draw liquid out of the affected area with a syringe and nothing came out! Could it be that he didn't inject the syringe far enough?
look for a puncture.....when ya find it drive the forcepts all the way through the boil...to the other side...the tube will be drawn through the channel you're creating with the forcepts....when you see the forcepts come out the other end grab the tube and suture it at both ends of the channel...a syringe aint gonna do "Diddly"...theres gonna be enough puss to fill a V8 can...and its gonna continue draining for the next week...even after you take out the tube.... the tube is just in there to keep the chaNNEL from healing over....it wont require any more sutures when you remove the tube.... i love all the yucky stuff, so i jump right into it...one of the callings i missed (Mad Scientist )
So true John...................pus needs to be drained no matter the cause. But I wouldn't lance it myself. I am too much of a chicken.........lol. I would gladly lance your boil but not my baby's.......lol.
Thanks Dosa, At least I know now it's not some crazy disease or something. As for your solution, considering the fact that I'm about as handy as an elephant trying to crochet while wearing mittens, one of two things would probably happen:
1. I'll pass out . 2. I'll end up killing my dog
I'm gonna stick with the meds since it is showing signs of going down, lol. Thanks though, wish you lived close by.
