FIRST AID KIT

  • scissors

  • Sterile dressing pads and self sticking horse banages (very helpful as you inevitably you always need at least 3 pairs of hands)

  • sterile water and optrex for cleansing/washing out eyes

  • Intrasite gel - suberb antibiotic/antibacterial sealing gel for deep cuts

  • Tweezers - to remove stings and splinters

  • various size sharp needles - for lancing

  • Muzzle for a distressed or agitated dog 0R nylon tights or stockings to make one (ask John he is bound to have some!)

MEDICINES

  • Amoxicillin antibiotic tablets 250g - dog bites not serious for the vet but prone to infection

  • Kaogel liquid - For puppy diarrhoea

  • Kaobiotic tablets - For Adult diarrhoea

  • Latex gloves - keep infection to a minimum

  • Various size syringes and needles for injectable antibiotics etc.

  • otifree solution used for cleansing external ear canal

HANDY ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS

  • Apple cider vinegar - for use with water as a cleanser for cuts and ear cleanser

  • Glucose - for use with water & tsp salt for rehydration solution

  • Tea tree oil - add with water and Cider to make antiseptic spray solution

  • Bicarb of soda - bee stings

  • Cider vinegar - wasp stings

I also have a seperate whelping kit - which i have posted on a seperate thread

I'm sure i must habe missed something!!!
Obviously all these products can be used in the case of mild problems and injuries...
A vet should always be the first port of call if you think a problem may be more serious!

I love the horse bandages, and here is a cheaper alternative to bandages. Pads, female maxi pads are great sterile bandages and can be used with the horse bandage to hold in place.

Yep! Good Idea, but remember to make sure they are not the ones with the gel absorbancy stuff inside ... I think the gel would be harmful if ingested...

I seem to only ever have "intestinal issues" with my dogs so my number one go-to is a big bottle of liquid Pepto.

We also always have hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting if the dog should say, EAT AN ENTIRE COMPOST BAG!!! (That's happened here twice. . . I guess I'm just glad she doesn't get into the trash with plastics/metals in it)

Oh, and benebac/ acidophilus. -- I give these ANY time I use antibiotics and/or when we're having digestive issues.

I also keep 4-5 different syringe sizes on hand for administering said medications (my dogs range in size from 3 to 150lbs so they aren't one size fits all) -- for pills we use peanut butter sandwiches.

Jess, you mean inflammatory Metacam and the antibiotic Cephalexin both are excellent products ...

I forgot about those two, and i think i need to stock up on them...

So another essential kit item would be a check list so we don't run out of anything without realising......

We use the triple antibiotic eye ointment. This is great to have around if you have to have a cherry removed too. You can get it online cheaper usually than at the vets.
